Recent data released by Shanghai Customs showed that two months before 2024, Shanghais imports in the field of semiconductor production equipment showed significant growth, especially in terms of making semiconductor devices or machinery and equipment for integrated circuits imports, not only the number has increased, but also the value of goods has achieved a dramatic surge.
According to statistics, between 1st and 2nd of 2024, Shanghais imports of such equipment reached 300 units, up 15.4% over the same period last year. More remarkably, the total value of these devices reached an astonishing $10.7 billion, up to 205% over the same period. This means that the average single price per device rose from $11.7 million to $3.57 million over the same period last year, reflecting the strong demand and significant increase in the market for high-end semiconductor production equipment.
During the same period, the average single price for machines and devices for the manufacture of semiconductor devices or integrated circuits across the country was $26.5 million, compared with the significantly higher average single price in Shanghai.
Looking back to the entire year of 2023, the import of such equipment in Shanghai was 1851 units, the total value of $ 43.2 billion, although the volume of imports fell by 10.6%, but the value of imports increased by 34.3%, showing the rising trend of the single device price.
At the same time, Chinas overall performance in the field in January and February 2024 was also very positive, importing 1714 units of equipment, the value of goods reached $45,5 billion, respectively increasing by 20.5% and 83.8%. The significant growth data not only reflects Chinas positive attitude in the development of semiconductor industry, but also reflects the global semiconductor equipment markets continuous heat.
In terms of imports of integrated circuits, Shanghai’s imports amounted to $11.7 billion in the two months prior to 2024, up 9.6% over the same period last year, but the total amount fell by 2.7% to $56.9 billion. The average price of imports of integrated circuits also fell from $0.549 to $0.488 over the same period last year, down to 11.2%. This change may be associated with price fluctuations and cost optimization in the global semiconductor market.
In addition, a total of 68.8 billion integrated circuits imported by Shanghai throughout the year 2023, amounting to $38.7 billion, demonstrates the city’s important position in the global semiconductor supply chain.
